Each perfume consists of a composed fragrance consisting of three different notes that determine the overall scent. When the first scent (top note) dissipates, we can smell the middle note, also know as the bouquet. As that fades, we’re left with the base note which is the third layer of a composed fragrance. All these notes work like a symphony to create a specific smell.
Some perfumes, for example would be considered floral and contain different scent notes like jasmine, lavender, or rose. Others may be a bit fruiter, with undertones of peach or citrus. Cinnamon is usually a spicy notes that smelled in some exotic perfumes. The best way to select a perfume is to determine which types of perfumes you prefer and then decide which base notes they contain before buying it.
Perfume Strengths
Fragrances are generally available in four different strengths. The higher the strength, the more expensive it will be.. Generally, stronger fragrances last longer and you only need to apply a small amount to your wrist or pulse points. Perfume has the highest concentration with 15 to 30 percent perfume oil mixed with alcohol.
The next lower level is eau de parfum, which generally last about six hours after applying it. It has about 15 to 18 percent perfume oil mixed with alcohol.
The third level is called eau de toilette and is generally inexpensive. You can find these in retail stores. You’ll probably need to apply it more than once per day to keep the fragrance going. It has about 4 to 8 percent perfume oil mixed with alcohol.
The lowest fragrance and fourth level is eau de cologne has roughly 3 to 5 percent perfume oil mixed with alcohol and water. Eau de cologne only lasts for about two hours after applying it.
You should definitely do a tests before you decide to purchase any fragrance to make sure you like it and will enjoy it. Dab a bit on and walk around in the store a while in an enclosed area and also outside.
